Ernie Kroeger – Selected Walks in the TRU Art Gallery

November 4 – 22, 2019, Opening Reception: Wednesday November 6 @ 4pm

Everyone is welcome.

Ernie Kroeger—so he says—has been walking since he was eleven months old. And even though he has flat feet, he has managed to put on quite a few miles exploring many places from Mexico to Ukraine. He learned to walk in Winnipeg and could sometimes be seen walking on the fences in the West End neighbourhood where he grew up. In an art school sculpture class he once built a wonky wooden sidewalk. During his time in Banff he hiked extensively in the Rocky Mountains and in 2001 published a book of photographs entitled ‘The Great Divide’. Exhibited at a number of venues, this work was subsequently shown at the Museo Nazionale della Montagna in Turin, Italy. In 2007 Kroeger was invited to lead the ‘Walking + Art’ residency at the Banff Centre, which brought together a group of 30 international artists and writers. In 2009 he helped co-found TRU’s Walking Lab and also published ‘My Morning Walk’, a book chronicling his walks to the coffee shop when he first moved to Kamloops. While working in Visual Arts at TRU he taught a number of special topics courses on walking and art. In recent years Kroeger has also led a number of walks in Kamloops to explore the now defunct Corkscrew Road. This exhibition will showcase a selection of artworks that Kroeger has made about walking, since the early 1990s.
